Mya - Oxford
MSc Biomedical Sciences - University of Oxford
Hello! I am a third year at the University of Oxford studying Biomedical Sciences. The course is a four-year integrated master’s degree and I have pursued a Neuroscience route, having taken modules predominantly on systems and cellular neuroscience, but also on endocrinology and immunology. My main areas of interest include the hippocampus and its role in memory, the causes of neurodegenerative diseases and psychiatric disorders. At the end of my second year, I completed a research project investigating how memories are consolidated during sleep, where I learnt how to analyse electrophysiological data in Python. I hope to continue this line of research into my fourth year where I will complete a prolonged research project on the connection between the gut and the brain. With the Biomedical Sciences course being a combination of Medicine, Biochemistry and Psychology, I hope to help foster interests across a broad spectrum of topics!
I achieved 9x Grade 9s at GCSE and A* A* A* in Chemistry, Biology and Fine Art at A-Level, in addition to an A in AS Maths. Having also successfully gone through to Oxford admissions process, and attaining top 10% in section 2 of the BMAT admission test, I am versed to help student through all aspects of the application journey. With nearly 3 years tutoring experience, I have helped students with A-Level Biology and Chemistry, and provided support through the admissions process, involving help refine personal statements, supporting with the BMAT, and performing mock-style interview sessions for multiple students. These interviews have been for students studying Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and Biology, and resulted in students obtaining successful offers.
My tutoring style involves identifying techniques which work best for the student, whether that be focusing on practice questions or creating diagrams to condense complex information into a memorable format. I want to foster a tutoring environment where students are comfortable to ask questions and fully understand the content before moving on. In terms of admissions preparation, my mock-style interview questions are challenging yet build in complexity so that prior knowledge can be applied to more abstract ideas. I approach tutoring as an opportunity to adapt to the individual needs of the student as I believe long-lasting learning is based on a trusting and supporting relationship between tutor and student, and that success is rooted in this!
