Andy - Imperial

MSc Computer Science - Imperial College London

Hello! My name is Andy and I am a Computer Sciences undergraduate at Imperial College London. At university, I have aced most of my tests, with my latest one reaching a score of 93%. Alongside my course, I have a strong passion for everything related to artificial intelligence, and I have done many side projects, such as building a variety of AI bots that play different games.

Prior to university, I studied at Brighton College and I have achieved 5A* in my A-levels. They are Mathematics, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. Besides my 5 subjects, I have achieved a Grade 2 in the Cambridge STEP Mathematics 2 paper. Also, during the two years, I have completed an EPQ on the comparison between the two strongest chess engines, Stockfish and AlphaZero, with a final grade of an A.

I believe that the most important factor of doing well academically is the interest in the subject. Interest comes from confidence, and confidence comes from seeing success in your hard work. When I was younger, I was only an average student in school. During the first year of my IGCSEs, my dad kept pushing me to work hard and I did extremely well in the final-year exam. From then on, my confidence soared and I felt motivation to keep going. I was on a, as I like to call it, a train to success. Since I saw results in my hard work and I now had a reputation to protect, I was able to push myself forward and excel academically without the input of my dad.

My job as a tutor, I believe, is to get the student on board the train to success. Once the student is on it, they will be automatically motivated to work hard on their own and therefore will do very well. In order to get the student on the train, the student must fully grasp the concepts they are learning. Conceptually understanding the content is way more useful than doing hundreds of exercises. Also, truly appreciating a new concept is a form of success, and the student seeing themselves understanding one concept will give them the confidence and motivation to put in the effort to learn the next one. This virtuous circle is the goal both the tutor and student should aim for.

I am currently tutoring a local student in Hong Kong, who is studying form 3 (equivalent to year 9 in the UK). I mainly help with her maths, but also physics occasionally. Initially, her scores in her tests are no more than 30%. After my help, she has significantly improved up to an average of 60%, with the highest one even being 73% within 4 months. I have also helped one of my friends who is a year younger than me with his university application process, including his personal statement. Originally, he was quite clueless on the process and could not pinpoint his interests and passions. Through my help and suggestions on reading materials and online courses, he has now secured offers from the university of Manchester and Bath to study Mechanical Engineering.
