PhD Materials Science and Engineering - Imperial College London

I completed my Rolls-Royce plc. sponsored PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London in 2020. During my time there, I studied the development of Cobalt-based superalloys for jet engine applications. It was a very challenging and interesting topic, involving a lot of mechanical testing, electron microscopy and extensive experimental design. Prior to this, I completed my BEng in Materials Science and Engineering. Metallurgy and Materials really spoke to me because it is so applicable to every day life - everything is made of materials! I currently work at one of the UK's National Laboratories as a metuallurgist and microscopist.

While at Imperial College, I taught a number of lab-based Undergraduate courses and mentored student groups working on projects. I gave advice on their experimental design, optimising their data and the best ways to present results. I marked the coursework for all of my labs, tailoring my feedback and providing advice on ways to improve their marks in the future. Towards the end of my PhD I began private tuition, covering a wide range of ages studying STEM subjects. I really enjoy building a relationship and developing students' views around the subject itself - I strongly believe a holistic interest and application is critical.
