Karim - Cambridge

MA Philosophy - University of Cambridge

Hello! My name is Karim, and I recently completed an MPhil in Philosophy at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, where I specialised in the Philosophy of Religion. Before that I completed a BA in Philosophy, also at Cambridge, and I look forward to beginning my PhD in Philosophy and Theology this Autumn. I have consistently ranked in the top 5-10 students in the Cambridge cohort, being awarded a Double First Class, a First Class in every exam, and two Prize Scholarships for my BA performance, and a Distinction for my MPhil performance. I have wide academic interests, including logic, medieval Islamic thought, ancient philosophy, analytic philosophy, metaphysics, mysticism, the nature of religious language and experience, religious pluralism, and Kant.

Having made the academic journey myself, I am keen to offer a helping hand to those near its beginning. With a friendly, interactive, and conversational approach to tutoring, which I developed from my experience supervising Philosophy at Cambridge, I am well-placed to help my students achieve their academic goals, and aim to teach by fostering a genuine enthusiasm for the subject and tailoring lessons to the needs of the student. I am well-qualified to teach subjects across the disciplines of Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious Studies at University undergraduate level, A-Level (and equivalents), and GCSE (and equivalents). I am also particularly apt to mentor and oversee Oxbridge applications in Philosophy, Theology, and for joint Philosophy programmes.

I am currently employed by the University of Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College, as Supervisor in Philosophy for their Higher Aspirations Scheme - a role that involves me not only designing and teaching a Philosophy course to numerous students, but also offering admissions guidance for Cambridge applicants. Prior to that, I gained much experience through my role as Supervisor in Philosophy at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, for their Bridging School. At the same time, I was employed by the University of Oxford as Marker in Philosophy for their John Locke Essay Competition. Prior still, I was employed by the Faculty of Philosophy at Cambridge as Assistant Teacher and Marker for undergraduate Logic.

Having held three teaching roles at Cambridge, I have developed a wealth of experience teaching a range of topics in Philosophy and Theology, such as arguments for the existence of God, Descartes' Meditations, contemporary philosophy of mind, meta-ethics, the metaphysics of time, and the nature of religious language. Outside of my university teaching, I have helped many secondary school students with their Philosophy and Religious Studies courses, including private 1-on-1 tuition and teaching a class of eight, and I have helped numerous university applicants gain offers of admission to top universities.
