Joe - University College London

BSc - Biological Sciences

Hi! I’m Joe, a recent graduate from UCL in BSc Biological Sciences, where I achieved a First. I enjoyed studying a variety of modules at university but gravitated towards computational biology and its various applications. For my final year project, I built statistical models in R to understand how landscape level factors such as land use change and agrochemicals drive biodiversity loss in global moth populations.

I started tutoring in sixth form, teaching primarily Maths and English. If students were working towards exams, I would focus on answering past exam questions, but also make sure they were grounded in the wider context of the subject matter. I believe it is important to build from the ground up, ensuring students understand fundamental concepts before tackling more complex ones.

Before studying at UCL, I read Engineering Science at Oxford for a year. My understanding of the application process means I am able to provide interview preparation/personal statement drafting support for admissions for both Engineering and Biology.

I later worked for a tutoring company in west London, where I helped prepare students for their Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning 11+ exams. Working with small groups of around five students at a time, we would go through exam questions together, picking out areas that were particularly difficult and making sure they were understood by all. Having to adapt to different learning styles in one session was a rewarding challenge, and I encouraged the students to learn from each other. I wanted to see whether they could articulate what they’d learnt accessibly to others, which is a great way to glean their level of understanding.

One of the most satisfying aspects of tutoring is the moment when things ‘click’ for the student, and they start to apply certain concepts in the right context independently, understanding their significance beyond the syllabus. I think this is when a subject starts to really become meaningful and, most importantly, fun for the student.
