John - Oxford

BSc - Mathematics

I attained a BA in Maths from Jesus College, Oxford. My specialist courses were in Applied Maths as well as the History of Maths, though I have a firm foundation in Pure Maths too. I believe anyone can learn to excel in Maths, given enough dedication and belief in their potential. I encourage students to read off-syllabus books to foster understanding and interest that extends beyond the material covered in the textbook—this is what separates a good Oxbridge candidate from the great.

I have experience setting mock Oxbridge interviews. For maths, this will be material you likely will not have studied in class: the interview tests your ability to think through new problems without relying on book-learning. I tutored 3 successful applicants to Oxbridge maths in my first season of teaching.

Outside of Maths, I also studied English Literature & Creative Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London. I write poetry and plays, with a particular interest in the history of Britain and Ireland. I believe in an expansive approach to learning—we must resist the temptation to box ourselves into one type of intelligence.

I am a friendly, warm and empathetic person. Students will feel able to share their worries and concerns with me, as well as grow their confidence for success.
