BA - Psychology and Philosophy

Hi! I’m Ed, a qualified teacher and Oxford graduate. I studied BA Psychology and Philosophy (part of the Psychology, Philosophy and Linguistics course) and have spent the past few years since graduating teaching Science and Psychology at a UK secondary school. Alongside my teaching, I have recently returned to Oxford University to study for an MSc in Learning and Teaching. My project involves using the most recent research literature to inform a new intervention using meta-talk (language used to describe one’s own thinking) to improve students’ ability to form written and spoken arguments. Constructing arguments is a vital skill when completing school exams and when aspiring to top universities.
I am well-experienced in preparing students for GCSE and A Level examinations as well as guiding them through the transition from A Level to university. Within my tutoring, I am able to go into greater depth with an individual and more acutely tailor my approach to their needs rather than the needs of a whole class. This brings greater flexibility, more opportunity for discussion, and the time to support all a student’s needs.
My sessions focus on giving the student the thinking skills that they need to answer questions. By focussing on the structuring of knowledge, the knowledge becomes easier to learn and easier to use. This approach is supported by the use of meta-talk that is usually reserved for university students. The 1:1 interaction in the sessions will also allow us to work on the emotional side of learning by building confidence and resilience.
