Hi, my name is Abbie! I studied at the University of Oxford for 4 years before achieving a masters of the Earth Sciences. I was educated at a state comprehensive in Wrexham, North Wales where I obtained my GCSEs and A-levels; specialising in the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths). I was particularly taken by Geology and the Earth sciences from an early age and later decided to pursue the Earth Sciences in university. My interest in Oxford stemmed from two sources: from my sister who achieved a place to study Biochemistry at Oxford a year before me; and from the Welsh high achievers’ network “Seren” which encouraged students from under-represented backgrounds in Wales to apply to Oxbridge. My specialties surround the climate and the oceans, with particular emphasis on the biological impacts on both systems. That being said, I love volcanology, planetary chemistry and all things fossil-ey!
I have taught Maths and Science to individuals ranging from 5 to 18 since I was in high school. This involved 30 hours of volunteering (as part of the Welsh Baccalaureate) in the classes of 12- and 14-year-olds teaching Science and Maths, respectively. I also spent 10 weeks on a girl scout camp in New York teaching young children about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). In terms of academic tutoring, I taught A-Level Maths to a student during covid who ended up applying to Oxford for Economics and Management. I also have a lot of experience giving talks on Oxbridge admissions, having been a student ambassador for the university and my college during my time at Oxford. I have supported a large number of students from Asia with admissions and have also done numerous talks for an Oxbridge charity, Insight Outreach, giving prospective students insight into Oxford life, the application process and debunking any myths associated with Oxford and Cambridge. I have significant experience supporting students of all ages and levels and supporting Oxbridge applicants throughout the process.
