Sarah - Oxford

BA in Classics - University of Oxford

Hi! I'm Sarah, and I am a recent Classics graduate from the University of Oxford (2021). I received an academic scholarship while at Oxford, for outstanding achievement. I studied both Latin and Greek to A level, and specialised in Ancient Greek literature, history, and philosophy during my undergraduate degree, but I also took modules in philology and linguistics. I am therefore well-equipped to advise undergraduates on a range of disciplines within Classics.

My own academic record and success in school examinations (11 A* at GCSE and 2 A*, 1 A at A Level) led me to take up tutoring while I was still in school. I helped GCSE Latin and Greek students achieve outstanding GCSE results in a school with a small, and struggling Classics department. Further, I was proud that my A Level Ancient Greek paper received the third highest mark in the country, all the more so because I was entirely self-taught. This experience of teaching myself Ancient Greek means I can empathise strongly with the struggles faced by students when confronted with a challenging and at times elusive language, and I particularly enjoy helping students untangle tricky grammar concepts to enhance their language abilities.

While at university I worked as an admissions ambassador, a job which involved mentoring prospective applicants and talking to school groups about the Oxbridge applications process. I was also an interview co-ordinator for three years. I currently work as an English Language Teaching Assistant in two schools, alongside which I tutor Latin and Greek to A level, and also students applying to Oxbridge. I hold both an ICPC (international child protection certificate) and an enhanced DBS check, and I have also completed several online courses in safeguarding. I pride myself on being an empathetic and friendly tutor, who recognises and responds to the individual needs of students. No question is too small or too stupid, and by being an approachable and open-minded tutor, my students get the most out of their lessons and leave with an increased confidence in their own abilities to solve problems. With over four years experience tutoring, I am confident that I can help any student achieve their academic goals.
