MPhil in Human Evolutionary Studies - University of Cambridge | BA Biological Sciences - University of Oxford

Hello, my name is Esther! I have just completed my MPhil in Human Evolutionary Studies at the University of Cambridge. Before my MPhil, I studied Biological Sciences at undergraduate level at the University of Oxford. I would love the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for learning with others, especially my love for biology which stems from my continued fascination with the history and processes of evolution, genetics and animal sociality.

I am excited to help guide students through the University application process, which I know from experience can definitely seem scary. I look forwards to working through problems and engaging in academic debates to help build the student's confidence in the subject matter and spark their interest in new areas. Alongside academic work, I love getting involved in team sports. I was on the women's blues ski racing team and the blues mixed lacrosse squad.

I realised how much I enjoy tutoring during my gap year before University. I started tutoring after thoroughly enjoying running a debating club at school for the younger years to help encourage public speaking and gaining confidence when facing large audiences. I was a private tutor for 11+, primary school English and Maths. It is extremely rewarding working through the areas students struggle with and seeing their confidence and understanding of the subject grow.

During my gap year, I was also a ski instructor at Zurs Skischule Arlberg which required a huge amount of responsibility, time management and team work. I taught children from ages of 4-11, who were either beginners or intermediates. I learnt how important it is as a teacher to be relatable to many different kinds of people. When teaching skiing to children I also learnt the importance of ensuring the lessons were always exciting and engaging to keep the children's attention and focus on me and what we were learning. I believe these are all very transferable skills when it comes to teaching children any new subject matter.

Furthermore, I taught English and Science for 6 weeks to approximately 600 students in Hong Kong, where I taught a range of abilities and ages from 6 to 20 year olds. This experience has equipped me with the skills and patience needed when it comes to tutoring.
