I am currently working as a Classics teacher in a private school in the North West of England, teaching Classics in Key Stage 3, Latin and Greek to A-level, and Classical Civilisation A-Level. As of September 2024 I will assume the role of head of department.
During my Classics degree at Oxford University, I took papers in Roman History, Greek Theatre, Roman Oratory, and Ancient and Modern Philosophy. During this time I developed a deep understanding of the Latin and Greek Languages, as well as a precise knowledge of what constitutes good academic practice, writing, and argument.
My experience during my A-levels in Maths and Further Maths, as well as more recent teaching in schools and tutoring has also equipped me to assist students in Mathematics.
I started tutoring in 2020 during my undergraduate degree. During this time I have successfully mentored A level students into Oxford and Cambridge University, significantly improved the grades of GCSE students I have worked with in all subjects, and taught Ancient Greek GCSE in 12 months to a student who achieved a grade 9.
My core focus when working with students is instilling them with the confidence they need to maximise their performance and work output. As well as focusing on developing core skills, I aim to elucidate the entire exams process, so that students feel ready to tackle it.
In addition, I believe that gaining a mastery of the basics in any area is often crucial, and this comes from developing very simple but impactful habits.
It is most important to me that all students I work with develop a thorough sense of responsibility for their learning, as well as a deep sense of satisfaction and enjoyment from improving and overcoming difficulties.
