Maria - Oxford
BA in Neuroscience - University of Oxford | MSc in Computational Neuroscience and Neuroengineering - Université Paris Saclay
Hi there! I'm Maria, a recent graduate with a BA in Neuroscience from the University of Oxford, and a Computational Neuroscience and Neuroengineering Masters degree at Université Paris Saclay. I'm fascinated by the mysteries of the brain, and in particular how to unlock those secrets using cutting-edge technology.
I was born in Brasil and moved over to the UK with my parents at a very young age. This has meant that I grew up speaking several languages, traveling between radically different cultures, and interacting with people from varied backgrounds from all over the world.
I left school with 13 GCSEs and 6 A-levels - all As and A stars- having done my first GCSE at the age of 10. Knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in Neuroscience, I focused on Mathematics (A), Chemistry (A), and Biology (A), but not wanting to neglect my interest for the humanities, also took English Literature (A).
My background, therefore, is such that I was able to hone both my academic abilities, and my affinity for connecting with others, which is what I hope to bring to my students. When I teach, it is informed by a global, interdisciplinary perspective, with a drive to make even the most complex of topics accessible to those who wish to engage with them. As such, I relish the opportunity to help people from all walks of life be able to succeed in reaching their University of choice, and best showcase their personal potential.
My tutoring experience is very varied, and has been several years in the making. I have accompanied individual students long-term in preparing for their GCSEs in the sciences and mathematics. As well as this, I have taught English as a second language, both as part of an international company with different students every week and on a voluntary basis to disadvantaged young people from Latin America who hope to study in the UK or the USA.
Additionally, I've provided help preparing for the University application process, whether that be to friends, clients, or strangers hoping to undertake the courses I have taken - I am always happy to be of assistance. This has included but is not limited to, reading and editing personal statements, revision support, and interview preparation.
