Nothing prevents more potential Oxbridge candidates from fulfilling their dreams of world-class education than their lack of confidence. Some of my classmates did not want to apply, because they did not think of themselves as “Oxbridge material”. Contrary to the popular belief, academic profiles of Oxbridge students are extremely varied - these are the passion and the sharpness of mind that count, and this applies both to the duration of your course, and to the admission process as such. If you’ve got these two, the rest is just a matter of making a good impression.

The personal statement, close reading tests, the interview - although they are much less scary than you may imagine, it is good to have something more than just your intuition to rely on. I will be happy to share my experience and help you show off your academic potential. In the last two years, I have helped a number of applicants, both as an employed mentor and informally, as a friend. I have seen their personal statements improve dramatically in quality, often simply by implementing a structure that worked with their message and by avoiding certain traps that many candidates fall into.

Apart from my legal studies, I take pleasure in learning languages, participating in Model UN, performing arts, and playing ice hockey. I am grateful that being a student at Oxford allows me to engage in all these activities, while still focusing on my subject. I hope that one day you, too, will thrive in the unique Oxbridge environment.

LUKAS PROVIDES:

Personal Statement Advice

There is no one way to write your PS, but all strong personal statements have certain things in common. The balance is key – admission tutors need to see that you are passionate about the course of your choice, and that you are ready to pursue this academic path. I will help you ensure that your essay conveys this message, while still being a personal story, specific to your experience.

Close Reading Tests (including the Law National Aptitude Test)

Literature in the IB, the SATs, and finally my studies in Oxford have all made me a very attentive reader. I know how to approach texts to extract their implied meanings and make an educated guess about the intention of the author. To best prepare my students for such tests, I use past-paper “official” exercises, as well as some of my own making, in order to adjust the form and the difficulty level to the personal needs of my mentees. I take extra care to work out with the student a strategy for approaching the essay part of the test, which is often the only chance to show their reasoning skills before the interview stage.

Interview Preparation

During the interviews, admission tutors want to get to know the real you, and to this purpose they employ various techniques. You should not try to trick them by pretending to be someone else – this will not work. However, you can do your best to show them the very part of you that they are waiting to see. Whether it’s legal texts comprehension or answering questions about your PS, I will practice with you to get used to the type of reasoning that will leave your future tutors intrigued and aware of your academic ability.
