Hi! I’m currently an undergraduate at Oxford University studying BA English and Italian. I received a Distinction in my English first year exams and in my second year I have especially enjoyed studying the works of Chaucer and other Middle English poets as well as my module on the Romantics. I am also incredibly passionate about the Italian literature that I study which I have been able to incorporate into my English degree to great effect. An ability to draw parallels between literature of different genres and countries allowed me to stand out at Oxford interview and is a skill I think is incredibly important to teach students. My breadth of reading in both my subjects, from personal reading and my Oxford course, also allows me to help any student find their own specific topic of interest and expand upon it – a practice I found invaluable when preparing for Oxford applications.
I studied Cambridge Pre U at Sixth Form, achieving D1 in English, French and History with full marks in my English Extended Essay –essentially an EPQ equivalent. I also attained a Distinction in Magdalen College School’s Waynflete initiative in a 5,000-word essay on the relevance of folklore and fairy tale in a modern society which is further experience I would use to inform any tutoring on coursework or EPQs for students.
I have previous experience tutoring 11+ and GCSE French and aim to use this grounding in 1-1 tutoring in combination with my wide knowledge of English and even Italian literature, to help students excel at either A-Level or Oxbridge applications for English. I believe that English is a subject in which an individual voice is essential for success and so aim to encourage students in finding their own way into a text whilst providing them with the analytical tools to truly hone their argument. I encourage debate and conversation with students which allows for more engagement and enjoyment throughout the lesson.
