Ami - Oxford

BA Maths and Philosophy - University of Oxford

Hello! My name is Ami and I am a current 3rd year studying Mathematics and Philosophy at the Queen's College, University of Oxford. I am especially interested in the overlap between mathematics and philosophy, including topics such as Logic, Set Theory, Proof Theory and their philosophical implications on both the foundations of mathematics as well as other disciplines. I have maintained a good balance from both sides of my degree throughout my time and Oxford, and have been lucky enough to take further courses focusing on analytic philosophy, an area I hope to write a thesis on in 4th year. I have achieved a 1st class degree in both first and second year, ranking 2nd and 3rd in my cohort respectively, as well as being a recipient of the Jodell Exhibition awarded for Academic Excellence. I am looking towards building my career as both a researcher and an educator after graduating.

For my A levels I achieved A* in 5 subjects: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Religious Studies. Outside of my studies, I am an active participant of both the University and College Music societies, with my main instrument being the Cello. I also enjoy playing for musicals and plays, as well as occasionally singing at open mic events!

I have tutored a variety of students from pre-GCSE up to A level. Subjects I have tutored include: Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry and Religious studies. In recent years, I have also worked as a mentor for university applications, focusing on editing personal statements. Outside of the standard curriculum, I have also been a tutor for UKMT Maths Olympiads for 5 years, working both with groups and individuals. I started tutoring for the UKMT after I attended the UKMT Invitation camp in Oxford during the summer of 2019, where a group of 12 top performing students in the UK were invited for a 1-week training camp as preparation for selection to the International Olympiads. I have also worked for The University of Oxford Mathematical Institute as a mentor for the MAT, where I oversaw the progress of a group of 12 students over a 3 month period during the summer.

I believe in the importance of have a thorough understanding of foundational content, which is indispensable to solving more complex problems. In my tutoring, I adapt my teaching style to the needs of the student, providing more basic or advanced questions and explanations depending on how well the student has displayed a grasp of the material. I try to always make my lessons as interactive as possible, giving the students the opportunity to present their own solutions or ideas, which I believe is the best measurement of whether a concept has been grasped fully! I hope to be a friendly and approachable person to all my students, yet firm in my delivery.
