Why?

For those interested in the history, archaeology and the art of the classical world, this is the degree for you. It provides a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to analysing the societies and culture of the Mediterranean world, with a focus on the cultures of Greece and Rome.

Course

The degree is taught through a combination of tutorials, lectures and classes.  They cover a variety of archaeological and historical approaches to ancient cultures. The is a wide variety of archaeological and historical basis to provide an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. There are opportunities to study Latin and Greek as part of the course.

Some students go on to become professional historians, archaeologists and work in heritage management. However, CAAH provides the interdisciplinary skills for many careers including Law, the Civil Service and publishing.

Moreover, students have the Ashmolean museum on their doorstep. The world-famous museum has an extensive collection of antiquities from Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, telling human stories across culture and time.

Applying

Candidates are expected to achieve AAA at A-Level. Students doing the IB are expected to achieve a score of 39 with 666 at Higher Level. There are no subject requirements for the degree, but a background in ancient history, classical languages and civilisations is helpful. In addition, applicants must submit essays to be assessed by the tutors.
