Why?
There's so much more to the study of History of Art than admiring the aesthetics of an object. History of Art is a way of unlocking the past through material culture.
The study of art history helps students tease out the social, political and personal narratives of a piece of art, so that they can carve out a story of human experience, informed by interests such as; social history, philosophy, anthropology, feminism and religion.
Course
In first year, students will study a number of core courses. They will also have the option to study a French or Italian Language modules.
In the second and third year students have much more flexibility. These are subject to available, but topics include Gothic Art through medieval eyes. South Asian Sculpture and Egyptian art and architecture. Students have the option to write a thesis in their final year.
Applying
Although no formal education in history of arts required, an interest in museums, galleries and artwork is necessary.
History of Art requires AAA at A Level. For those doing IB it requires 38 points with 666 at Higher Level. Candidates are also required to take an essay-based subject to A Level or Higher Level in the IB. Certain subjects such as History, English and Art may be helpful for the course but are not required for admission.

Oxford requires you to include a response to an art object, of no more than 750 words, in your application. It’s worth starting this at the earliest opportunity so that you have plenty of time to draft and redraft it. Hopefully, this should be a reasonably pleasant exercise…
