Why?

An English degree is best suited for someone who loves reading and discussing books. English Language and Literature offers a comprehensive syllabus which combines new areas of the discipline with traditional study.  

The course aims to develop students’ conceptual abilities and analytical skills by exposing them to a variety of literary critical approaches, to promote and develop clarity and persuasiveness in argument and expression.

Course

In the first-year students are introduced to conceptual and technical tools to study language and literature. Students will also study basic medieval, Victorian and modern literature.

In second and third year the scope of the degree broadens much more with two options for students. The first option in involves a study of English literary history four historical papers in second year with more specialised modules in third year. The second option is to follow a course in Medieval Language and Literature. This includes a thesis option of your choice.

Applying

Candidates are expected to achieve AAA at A Level English and an IB score of 38 with 666 at higher Level. Candidates are naturally expected to have done English Literature or English Language and Literature at A Level or the Higher Level in the IB. Another language or History may be helpful but are not necessary for admission.

Furthermore, candidates must take the English Literature Assessment Test (ELAT) as a part of their application.
