Why?

There are very few products inventions in the last 100 years that don’t involve the use of chemistry. It is where experimental science and factual material meet. Chemistry is often regarded as the central science; it is foundational to biology, physics, geology and environmental science. Students at Oxford will be able to explore the full breadth of the subject, everything from superconductors to pharmaceuticals.

Course

In their first three years, Chemistry students will have roughly ten lectures a week and afternoon lab sessions twice a week. They will also have mathematics and tutorials during the week. 

The fourth year at Oxford is spent doing a research project. This has been a distinctive feature of Chemistry at Oxford for over 100 years. This research project need not take place at Oxford University; students can study at universities abroad or spend time at laboratories in industry.

Applying

Chemistry at Oxford has a minimum grade requirement of A*A*A. Applicants must have A Levels in both Mathematics and Chemistry. A*s must be in Mathematics and a science subject (Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Alternatively, candidates are expected to have a minimum of 40 IB points. A 7 in Higher Level Chemistry is necessary. In addition, candidates must have a 6 or 7 in Higher Level Mathematics or a 7 in Standard Level Mathematics with a 7 in a Higher Level second science. In addition, applicants must take section one of the Thinking Skills Assessment
